The Power of Music
by Sheku Kanneh-Mason

The cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason is known to most of us, I think. He won the BBC Young Musician of the year but also performed at Harry and Meghan's wedding. He has performed in many of the leading auditoria in the land delivering anything from Bach's solo suites to Bob Marley's reggae.

Coming from a seemingly ordinary family in Nottingham - though all are incredibly gifted - he and his siblings have attracted a lot of attention for their talent and skill and what can be achieved in a modest, unexceptional setting.

This is Sheku's account of his experience. How he first fell in love with the cello when hearing it played at a concert at the age of six - 'my whole body was centred in an uncharacteristic calm,' he said.

He received encouragement and support from his parents who would take him and his sister to lessons and concerts in London and throughout the contry to give them the most opportunities possible.

But he also tells of the extraordinary vision of the headteacher and staff at his school. Here music was an integral part of school life and there was no need to choose between football or playing an instrument, both were good, available and encouraged. When Sheku's sister told her teacher she wanted to be a concert pianist, the teacher responded 'and with hard work, I'm sure you will be'.

It's hugely inspiring and uplifting but above all this book is Sheku's passionate cry for more to be done to acknowledge and celebrate the power of music for all of us.

He challenges the conservative, traditional, elitist ethos that still exists in classical music and bemoans the lack of support for music in schools - his own school is now a different place, sadly.

He highlights how music transforms our mental and physical health, how it can bring about social change, and make a house a home. It is for everyone, not just a privileged few.

Music is what makes us alive, mindful and connected to each other, he says. Music is what makes us human. This is the power of music.

A wonderful slim and easy read that has a powerful message.
