My book review of 'Getting away' by Kate Sawyer

Getting away
by Kate Sawyer

Kate Sawyer is well known to us in Suffolk. She lives in Bury St Edmunds and has been tireless in presenting her novels through local bookshops, events and festivals, as well as travelling throughout the country. Her other two novels 'The Stranding' and 'This Family' have proved very popular and her writing continues to be strong, engaging and inventive.

Margaret Smith is at the beach, with her family. They've escaped from school, work and daily life for these few days of sea, sun and sand. It's the first time they've ever managed to get away together.

This is a holiday they will repeat over the coming decades and we'll see how their expectations and their lives are transformed with the passing years.

There are new destinations as the family grows and changes, relationships alter, misunderstandings abound and secrets are revealed.

The story moves from the 1930s to 2010s and the atmosphere and detail of life in the different decades is vivid and authentic.

This is such a clever idea and it's executed brilliantly! I'm looking forward to reading it again - knowing what happens to the characters, I want to remind myself on how they started out.

Kate will be doing events in the area to promote the book and I'm hoping that I will be speaking to her about it at FolkEast later in the summer. More details nearer the time.
