My book review of 'You can't hurt me' by Emma Cook

This is a thriller written by an editor of the 'Observer' newspaper. I was intrigued both by the premise of the story, and the fact that it was written by a journalist, and about a journalist.
It's been compared to AJ Finn's 'The Woman in the Window', JP Delaney's 'The Girl Before' - and reminded me of 'Before I Go to Sleep' by SJ Watson. It's a gripping read!
Anna is commissioned to work as a ghostwriter for a leading neuroscientist called Nate. His work at the mysterious Pain Laboratory could be transformational but his research is overshadowed by the recent death of his wife Eva.
Strangely, Anna had had a conversation with Eva before her death and feels a sense of connection with her. So as she writes Nate's story, she feels a responsibility to find answers for Eva. What's more, Eva had been one of Nate's patients because she had been unable to experience pain yet enjoyed inflicting it on others.
It's an interesting idea which is full of menace and foreboding, and a few good twists too.
