My book review of 'Churchill in Quotes' by
The 60th anniversary of the death of Winston Churchill is on Friday, and a number of books are published, or reissued, to mark the day and look again at the contribution he made in so many ways. And there are fascinating facts to discover.
Did you know that Winston Churchill came under enemy fire more than 50 times; took 36 bottles of wine, 18 of whisky and six of vintage brandy to the Boer War; painted over 600 works of art and won the Nobel Prize for Literature?
There's much to remember and acknowledge in the man, and this is the perfect book for dipping into for inspiration and contemplation, or, as the introduction states 'for criticism and review'.
After a succinct introduction giving a brief biography of the man, there are a collection of quotes providing a sample of 'Winston Churchill's adroitness with the English language, a celebration of his way with words that will amuse and inspire'.
Each quote is accompanied by a stunning black and white image of the man in action, captured by photographers of the Press Association.
His sayings include such gems as: 'Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm' ... 'Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference' ... 'Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.'
Of the qualities required of a politician, he said: 'The ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year - and to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen.'
In the 200 pages of this book, there are many more of his sayings to make you think, pause, chuckle and consider. It really is a wonderful collection, beautifully presented with stunning photography.
