My book review of 'How to roller-skate with one leg' by Ella Dove

by Ella Dove
Recommended age: 9+

The writer is an editor of a woman's magazine and she is an amputee - the result of a seemingly innocent but ultimately catastrophic fall when she was out running eight years ago. She used her experience to inspired a novel for adults but Dame Jacqueline Wilson encouraged her to write this book for children (for readers aged 9-12).

The story tells of 12-year-old Maya who had to have her leg amputated after an accident crossing the road after school one day.

We meet her some months later as she's continuing her recovery.

Though she's back at school, she's finding the stairs and crowded corridors challenging. But that was to be expected. What surprises her is how she's received by her friends. Many of them don't know how to deal with her injury and her old best friend won't even speak to her.

However Maya finds some loyal and supportive friends and, alongside her loving parents, she positively and resolutely seeks to overcome all the challenges she faces.

As she approaches her 13th birthday, Maya focuses on completing all the things she put in a list, written before her accident. It includes learning to roller-skate.

This is a heartwarming, upbeat and uplifting story of hope and resilience when dealing with the consequences of a traumatic event. The central character is determined and resourceful and she shows her friends, family and herself that her injury doesn't have to be the sole focus of her life.

The author Ella Dove approached the bestselling, award-winning children's writer Dame Jacqueline Wilson and offered her the idea for this story, but Jacqueline told Ella, in the nicest possible way, that she should write it herself.

Jacqueline has since said of the finished book, it is 'a book to race through, heart thudding, cheering Maya's courage - a book to keep forever because it's so subtle, so surprising, so very special'. It's a fabulous book.
