Meet the author Alison Weir
Thomas Wolsey had a modest upbringing, born to a butcher in Ipswich, but schoolteachers quickly recognised his intelligence and he was sent to Oxford to study at the age of eleven.
He enjoyed the world of academia but the church was the only route he could pursue to achieve the power, wealth and influence he desired and, though he lacked a spiritual calling, he gained patronage from the Archbishop of Canterbury and then a place beside the King.
Wolsey became the richest and most powerful man in England, but all the time he maintained a secret, forbidden life.

Alison Weir has written 37 books and in recent years has focused on the Tudors, particularly Henry's six wives. She is an engaging speaker and passionate about her subject.
