Meet the author Alison Weir

Tuesday 20th May 2025, 7.30pm
Venue: Riverside Theatre, Woodbridge
Tickets: £25 including a copy of The Cardinal

Thomas Wolsey had a modest upbringing, born to a butcher in Ipswich, but schoolteachers quickly recognised his intelligence and he was sent to Oxford to study at the age of eleven.

He enjoyed the world of academia but the church was the only route he could pursue to achieve the power, wealth and influence he desired and, though he lacked a spiritual calling, he gained patronage from the Archbishop of Canterbury and then a place beside the King.

Wolsey became the richest and most powerful man in England, but all the time he maintained a secret, forbidden life.

Seemingly charmed, and having it all, there comes a time when Wolsey is forced to make choices, and King Henry demands the ultimate sacrifice from his trusted friend.

This is a fabulous tale of a scholar, lover, father and priest. It tells of loyalty and friendship, wealth and power, deceit and compromise.

It's a page-turner of a book, and the life and court of Henry VIII never fails to excite and fascinate.

Alison Weir has written 37 books and in recent years has focused on the Tudors, particularly Henry's six wives. She is an engaging speaker and passionate about her subject. Come and hear her speak about her research into Thomas Wolsey, her prolific writing schedule, and her desire to excite and inspire us with her biographies of the kings and queens through history.

Alison will be in conversation with Catherine Larner at The Riverside.

Early bird tickets are £22 (including a copy of The Cardinal RRP £25) if purchased before 1 April.

After 1 April, tickets are £25 (including the book).  One further ticket may be purchased for £12.
