People like stars
by Patrice Lawrence

Having read and enjoyed 'Needle' by Patrice Lawrence, I was eager to try this title when it was recommended to me. Lawrence usually writes for the older age group - this is her first for the middle grade, for readers of 9-12 years. And it's another well written story confronting a challenging subject.

We are introduced to three teenagers in turn and learn their individual stories. This feels rather clunky at the start as we're sure they must be connected in some way but this isn't apparent for a little while.

First we meet Ayrton who was stolen from his mum as a baby. He was returned safely but now his mum won't let him out of her sight. Stanley has a grandmother whom he's not allowed to meet and his mum won't even talk about her. And Sen is homeless so when she finally finds a place to live, she's determined not to upset her secretive landlady.

The mystery in all their lives is eventually revealed and resolved when their paths cross. A thoroughly engrossing and satisfying read with sympathetic and engaging characters.
