Cruise Ship Kid

My review:

Silver is almost eleven (well, ten and a quarter) and lives on a cruise ship with her mum who is deputy director of entertainment. There's lots to do on the ship, and amazing places to visit when they make port, but Silver doesn't have any friends her own age.

Now that some children have joined the ship, she's eager to attract their attention and when a valuable watch goes missing, she thinks she might be popular with everyone if she tracks down the person responsible.

This is great adventure, written as a diary by Silver. We learn all about living on board a cruise ship, as a visitor and a crew member. And Silver reaches out to us, the reader, eager to be our new best friend. She invites us to spot truths and lies, shows us how we can identify countries by their shapes on a map and learn some nautical terms.

The book is written by Emma Swan, an actress best known for starring on the West End in the Horrible Histories. She spent most of her childhood on the P&O cruise ships where her parents worked. She was home-schooled here for her primary education and then spent every holiday on board a cruise ship. Naturally she's drawn on this experience in telling us Silver's story, and two of the octogenarian Gang members, Tommy and Sylvia, are based on her grandparents.

A fun, energetic and entertaining read. And there's a second book planned for 2026.
