The Boy in the Suit

My review:

Solo is ten and lives with his mum. She's struggling to make ends meet so he hasn't got the correct school uniform (and repeatedly gets penalised for it by his form teacher) and they don't have food in the cupboard.

So Solo's mum takes him with her to gatecrash funerals in order to get free food.

One day they crash the funeral of a celebrity and get caught. And a photographer is there to capture the moment.

Their story goes viral, humiliating them both. Solo's mum's reaction is to disappear and Solo first fends for himself but then decides to try and find her and so his adventure begins.

This is a brilliant book. It's original and challenging in addressing the impact of the cost of living crisis, mental health and addiction issues, and the preconceptions and prejudices we can all hold.

It also presents resilience and resourcefulness, kindness and generosity, friendship, family and community. But most of all it's a fabulous story which is life-affirming and full of hope. I loved it.
